It’s Pizza Time in Restaurant City!

February 23, 2011

Restaurant City fans are in for a real culinary treat this week as Playfish’s widely popular cooking strategy game heads into a Venetian theme and launches a new feature: The Pizzeria!

Starting this week players will have the opportunity to unlock the amazing Pizzeria – the ultimate cooking utility, which includes a fast stove and drink dispenser.

But, of course no great Pizzeria can be built overnight! Players will be able to complete building this grand collectible over time, unlocking various components of the Pizzeria by mastering a series of recipes.

The first recipe to master is the delicious Pizza Vegetariana, which will unlock the basic version of the Pizzeria. From there, continue to unlock and master other recipes by collecting ingredients from friends or by earning them through the game! Be sure to check into Restaurant City to find out what recipe is next on the list to be mastered!

The Pizzeria also comes with its own mini game – the Dough Boy!

A happy chappy, he’ll help the chef at the Pizzeria by preparing the pizza dough! Wait for him to highlight with a green border that tells you he’s ready to toss some dough in the air. When you click him, make sure you click the dough in time so that he catches it! Can you imagine what will happen if he doesn’t…?

Restaurant City has come out with great collectibles over time – the Sushi Bar, Lounge Bar and Karaoke Bar, even a Bowling Alley. With the new Pizzeria, Restaurant City continues to put the fun into one of Facebook’s most popular cooking games.

Announcing the Lounge Bar competition results!

July 26, 2010

Firstly thank you all for taking part in the Lounge Bar competition. We were as overwhelmed as ever at the sheer skill and creativity on show, and let us tell you now that makes us pretty darn overwhelmed!

We’ve sent our roving restaurant critic to report on the winning restaurants, so take it away roving restaurant critic!

I’m reporting live from the winning restaurant tapping the results of the competition into my trusty laptop. I’m not going to say too much about where I am just yet so I don’t spoil the surprise but I will tell you that from where I’m sitting I can see a rather nice collection of bottles and a drinks keg, decorated tastefully with a fine black marble pillar.

But more about where I’m sitting later. The competition was split into four parts. As well as asking you to show us the last word in lounge bar dining there were  three other categories — the More Than A Bouncer Award, the Oops! I Can’t Believe That Just Happened! Award and the relatively sensible sounding Best Lounge Bar Name Award.

Bouncers are the unsung heroes of Restaurant City. They don’t get paid like the other staff do. They don’t get to rest like other staff do. They just have to stand there and wait just in case someone causes trouble. And touch wood, no customer has ever caused any trouble in the history of Restaurant City. The hours are long and the work can be a little uneventful. So we wanted to give the bouncers a chance to show what they can really do. And you know what? It turns out they’re good at being big. But not, y’know, bouncer big. We’re talking really big. Like, this big:

So congratulations gemesimo, the 100 Playfish Cash for the More Than A Bouncer Award is yours. We’d come visit your restaurant to congratulate you in person but we’re a bit put off by the whole scary giant bouncer being in there thing. By the way, I just ordered this pink fruit cocktail from behind the well stock drinks bar in the overall winning restaurant but it was kind of sugary for me and I haven’t got much of a sweet tooth. Between you and me I poured it into one of the blue and white Ming vases that were close to my table and- oops, I think I just gave another clue where I was didn’t I? No. Bad roving reporter. Think before you type.

Anyway, for the next entry, well, we shouldn’t really laugh but we have to admit it made us chuckle. This one comes courtesy of “LOL!!” and we really hope the 100 Playfish Cash they just won helps to repair some of the flood damage in their restaurant.

As you can see, LOL!!’s staff have paddled out of the restaurant to go on strike outside. Having said that they don’t seem to be in agreement on the terms, with some claiming the restaurant needs a bar, some arguing what the restaurant needs is a new stove and one who we’re guessing has had enough because all he really wants is a new job. Well done LOL!!, we hope you get your restaurant back in business soon. And to the guy outside asking for a new job, we really hope that works out for you.

Next up is the Best Lounge Bar Name Award. VIP Lounge (Very Important Pharaohs) takes the top spot earning khoi1979 100 Playfish Cash! Special mention must go to Cocoa Cabana by PunkiC and The Codfather by Spursy79 which came a close 2nd. 1979 must have been a good year for restaurant naming!

So now for the moment you’ve all been waiting for. The top 3 winning restaurants as voted for by the Playfish team. A picture paints a thousand words so we’ll let your photography skills do the talking:

Pinky25 wins 200 Playfish Cash for Exquisite

Davidk wins 250 Playfish Cash for The Full Moon

So that just leaves one restaurant. The restaurant which I’m sitting in now enjoying the duck confit, which might I say is every bit as exquisite as the ambience. The winner of the Lounge Bar Competition and the 300 Playfish Cash grand prize is…

BUTTERCUP with Black Magic Bar! Congratulations BUTTERCUP!

Don’t worry, we didn’t forget the community vote. We wanted to save it until last because there otherwise we’d have given away which restaurant came in first place. So, we asked you to vote for your favourites which would take 4th, 5th and 6th place in the competition and earn their owners a cool 150 Playfish Cash each. And you know what? It turns out great minds think alike. Black Magic Bar was your top voted restaurant with an impressive 23.3% of the vote and it was our top voted restaurant too. Your 3rd choice, The Full Moon with 14.87% of the vote, was actually our choice to come 2nd overall. So that means your 2nd choice, Euphoria with 17.89% of the vote, takes 4th place overall. Cocoa Cabana takes 5th place with 11.33% of the vote and Carpe Noctum takes the 6th spot with 10.36% (apologies to C and H who were wrongly credited with 6th place). Give yourselves a pat on the back for a job well done, folks.

Well that’s a wrap. We hope you’ve enjoyed the competition and all those amazing lounge bars. Congratulations to all the winners and everyone who took part! You’re all awesome!

A chat with Pet Society’s Product Manager, Vivienne Bearman!

February 9, 2010

Hi guys! As Valentine’s Day draws nearer we’ve seen lots of romantic items appearing across all of our games – from the sweet Valentine’s Day theme gifts you can send your fellow culinary friends in Restaurant City to the beautiful romantic Victorian set available in Country Story, I got in touch with Vivienne Bearman at Playfish HQ to find out what she and her team have got in store for Pet Society fans.

Hi Vivienne. Thanks for taking some time out of your busy day to chat with me and our readers! Would you let our fans know what you do here at Playfish?
Sure! Hi guys – I’m the product manager for Pet Society which means I keep an eye on what players are doing in the game, as well as listen to their suggestions and feedback and use it to make the game better for our players.

Cool! But for those who haven’t played Pet Society yet, would you give people a quick description of what the game is about?
Pet Society is a game you can play on social networks like Facebook and MySpace. It’s a casual game where you create an animated pet of your choice to take care of. But there is just so much more to it than that – and that is what makes it special. Pet Society is designed so that you can play with your friends and family. For instance, you can visit your friends’ pets at their houses or send them really cute gifts. There are tons of items to collect, whether you want them for yourself or to give to your friends. You can also go fishing with your pet and collect all sorts of weird and wonderful fish, or become a pro-athlete at the Stadium and win lots of coins and achievements. There’s just so much to do I could spend all day telling you about it. Though it’s a very casual game, I have to admit I’m a little addicted and spend as much time as I can on there!

That sounds fun! You mentioned there are lots of things to collect. What new things do our players have to look forward to as we get closer to Valentine’s Day?
Naturally, we’ve released a really fun and romantic Valentine’s Day theme in Pet Society. You can start collecting the new items from all the various stores in the game but also you can give that special someone a gift that won’t open until February 14th. We’re hoping people will receive lots of presents to open on Valentine’s Day! My current favourite items are the beautiful Romantic Castle Terrace and the Romantic Castle Staircase that you can get from the Luxury store. I can’t wait to get my hands on them! I hope someone sends me something, haha…

On the Valentine’s theme, I noticed that the Pet Society Fan Page recently announced a competition, too – can you tell me a little bit about it now?
Well, we’ve asked our fans to show us what their pet’s perfect Valentine would look like by submitting pictures to the competition page. The game is really great for giving our players the creative space to express themselves and we’ve been getting loads of really fantastic entries. I can’t wait for the winners to be announced. We’ll be taking entries until Sunday 14th February at midnight GMT and winners will be announced on Friday 19th February. The best entry will be rewarded with 500 Playfish Cash and a personalised gift for your Pet Society pet, as well.

Where will the winners be announced?
All of our fans and players can keep track of all of the latest Pet Society news and announcements at the official Pet Society blog and the Playfish blog.

Excellent. This month has been very busy for Pet Society! You’ve also released a brand new game feature, is that right?
Yeah! I’m really excited about this particular new release. The recent new feature lets your Pet Society pet have their own pet – we’ve called them Petlings! Players can go to the Garden store and buy either a kitten or a puppy for their pet. We’re planning on releasing more Petlings in the future so we hope the fans will definitely be watching this space for more news on that. On an unrelated note, I just wanted to mention that we’ve also increased the number of ways players can earn bonus coins – from playing the daily lottery to walking around town to collect coins that drop from trees. So, yeah, we’re constantly improving the game.

So many new features! How do you come up with these ideas and keep the game feeling fresh?
I count myself very lucky to be working with such an amazing team. Our artists have a fantastic feel for who our players are and what they want. We also have very dedicated coders and developers for the game. We all work passionately to bring something new and exciting to our fans every week. The Pet Society themes are sometimes tied to fun festivals around the world and we also pay attention to what people are saying on the Pet Society forum. In fact, we asked our players what they wanted to see in the game toward the end of last year and we’re now using that feedback to help us plan out the next few big item themes. The Pet Society team are really friendly and we all get along really well together. I think this really shows through in the game, both in the cute graphics and the happy themes we come out with.

What would you say you’re the most pleased with so far?
I just love that we’ve created a game that lets friends and family play together. And it’s such a quick game to get into – it’s not challenging but there are lots of things to do if you put the time inif you want to, of course! I really love that I can visit a pet’s home and just check out how creatively the owner has used the items we created for them. We’ve seen some really sophisticated designs and themes appearing and it’s so wonderful to see our players finding a form of expression through Pet Society.

Well it has to be asked, Vivienne, what’s the name of your pet?
Hahaha. I’ve called her Tinky. That was the name of my first cat when I was little.

And dare I ask which of the Playfish games is your favourite?
All of our games are beautiful – everyone at Playfish really puts their hearts and minds into them and I know we’ll continue to make them better for our players. So even though I naturally spend a lot of time on Pet Society, I really do love all of our games!

And finally, Vivienne, any last comments?
Definitely! A shout out to our fans!  We’re always interested to hear what players want from the game and the best way to tell us is through the Pet Society forum. We are often running surveys there which players can get involved in if they want, and someone from Playfish is online there 24/7 to listen to players ideas and concerns!

Thanks, Vivienne – and I’m sure we’re all looking forward to more fun releases on Pet Society!

Announcing the winners of our Festive Decorating competition!

January 8, 2010

Yes please Tami, we’ll take 10! In fact make that 20!

And if you don’t know what we’re talking about, boy you’re in for a treat!

So last year we asked you to take the inspiration of Playfish to make some festive decorations. We don’t like to restrict you too much — we love seeing what you achieve when you take some simple guidelines and run with them — so we kept it simple: show us some festive decorations with a Playfish twist. We gave a few examples, like greetings cards based on Playfish games, or re-creating your family holiday decorations in a Playfish games, but the sky was really the limit.

We could carry on for several paragraphs about how much you blew us away once again with your creative skills but in truth, we think you guys know how good you are by now. And my word are you good. No, let’s just put our prizes where our mouth is and get onto the good stuff: the winning entries! Everyone listed below wins a Playfish 2010 calendar, a goody bag of Playfish and EA merchandising, plus:

The 20th to 11th runners up below each won 50 PFC. Well done everyone!

11 Bevypoo – If this cake tastes half as good as it looks… boy, what a cake!

12 x-nick-x-86 – We loved this card because it managed to include all our games in a very original style, well done! The Word Challenge font was a plus!

13 Kee Ping – Definitely the best Festive farm decoration received, we know it takes a while to re-arrange your farm in Country Story, great job!

14 BreakbeatTiki – We received lots of gingerbread restaurants but this revised version of Jingle Bells was spot on!

15 Thanks to Claire for her entry which represents the Filipine festive tradition: different and interesting!

16 kdgalaxy – These cards are amazing, so creative and detailed. With little envelopes too!

17 Meerkat – These tiny pet tree decorations are so pretty, how did you make them?

18 Dira Dudi – Your pet’s house was decorated with fantastic taste; one of the best entries for this category!

19 Isham – We loved this restaurant and the way you presented it, and clean bathrooms too — hygiene first!

20 prezrickard – This greeting card is truly special: so different and captivating. You have a talent, keep working on it!

The 10th to 4th placed runners up each won themselves a cool 100 PFC. Congrats all!

4 ericc – This veggie tree was definitely the most original festive tree we saw in the competition!

5 Ana la Rana – We loved this story; who would have thought the Gourmet King could be so cheeky with our pets!?

6 Cruzi – the whole restaurant staff gathered together to welcome customers with Christmas carols: how nice!

7 Kokori79 – A candy train to the North Pole: what a sweet piece of engineering! We love the sparkling animation too! :0)

8 thegreysheep – this entry must have taken ages to knit; the result was awesome!

9 Rodrigo Villanueva – this is the first time we’ve seen our characters like this, how about you come to the Playfish office and paint some more?

10 3Designer – Your 3D work is so realistic, definitely one of the best greeting cards in the competition!

And now, drum roll… in 3rd place winning 250 Playfish Cash, here’s droby5’s festive hotel! That luxurious selection of suites would be the envy of any 5 star hotel, although we’re dubious about the health and safety aspects of the toilets being located in the bedrooms!

In 3rd place…

Next up is chemicalsmile’s Pet Society Christmas. chemicalsmile put an astonishing amount of work into replicating her festive Pet Society home in her actual home. The attention to detail is incredible, right down to the tiny snowman on the piano- wait a minute, where’s the tiny snowman on the piano in Pet Society? Only kidding chemicalsmile, enjoy your 500 Playfish Cash!

In 2nd place…

Finally, as you may have guessed from the first sentence, were absolutely bowled over by the sheer awesome put into Tami’s Robot Candy Dispenser. I mean this thing is absolutely amazing. Just check out the step by step guide to making it… Tami, you’re a genius! Your Apple iPod Touch is on its way!

Finally in 1st place!

The holiday season! A time for family and friends, extra calories and, of course, decorations. Houses, gardens, tables, streets… everything gets a makeover!

Here at Playfish we know how creative you guys are and how much you love decorating, both in Playfish games and in real life. “So!” We thought “How about a festive decorating competition!” And that’s what we did!

It’s clear you like to create all kinds of amazing ideas so we don’t want to limit you too much – maybe you’d like to make your home in Pet Society look just like your home in real life with all its traditional decorations?

Or perhaps you could use inspiration from your favourite Playfish game to make decorations in real life: Restaurant City greetings cards, Country Story tree decorations, Crazy Planets wrapping paper…

There’s no limit to what you can do, just take the concept of Playfish style festive decoration and see where it takes you!

There’s some great prizes up for grabs for our favourite Playfish style decorations so we can’t wait to see what you come up with!

We’ll be taking entries until December 23rd at midnight GMT and winners will be announced on Friday 8th January.

Just make sure you agree with the Terms & Conditions prior to entering!

Announcing the winners of our Restaurant City dream menu competition!

September 18, 2009

Staggering. The number of entries, the quality of your menus, the sheer tastiness of the dishes you proposed – there’s no other word for it. Just staggering.

Let’s wind back a little.

After the success of asking which drinks to put in the game we thought it might be fun to go one better and let you add an entire meal.

So that’s a starter, a main course, a dessert, and finally a tasty drink to wash it all down.

We wanted you to tell us what your dream menu was. Our favourites would then make it into Restaurant City as courses which everyone could create using YOUR recipes.

There were prizes up for grabs of course, not that seeing your creation in the game wasn’t a huge deal in the first place; one prize for each of the four entries whose course or drink made it in.

We hit a slight snag at this point but more on that later.

Without further ado, the folowing are our lucky winners:

Nuttomaki is first up to whet all our appetites with a mouthwatering selection of dim sum using a recipe of prawns, pork and flour. A delicious way to start any meal, we’re sure you’ll all agree! Congratulations Nuttomaki, your recipe and 100,000 coin prize are coming soon!

Main course is courtesy of ColeWy in the form of roasted lamb with pomegranate sauce using a recipe of lamb, pomegranate and garlic. Congratulations ColeWy, your recipe is going to be in the game! You’re a 100,000 coin winner!

Dessert arrives in the form of the popular tiramisu and is compliments of Bruder. Bruder’s choice of ingredients were egg cream and coffee, and so it shall be in Restaurant City. Bruder, your culinary expertise will be whispered of for many years to come in the halls of Michelin Castle or wherever it is chefs secretly meet to whisper about culinary expertise. We’re pretty sure they must have some kind of pre-arranged meeting place for that kind of thing.

Finally, blackfir3 takes the honours for our favourite drink with saffron tea. Blackfir3’s suggested ingredients were saffron, tea and water. So simple we could make it ourselves. And, happily, we’ll soon be able to in Restaurant City! Congratulations blackfir3, enjoy your 100,000 coins and the inevitable fame and admiration which is the true prize of all Playfish competitions.

So the snag we mentioned earlier. Well, you see, some of those menus were amazing. Like, really amazing. All we essentially asked you to do was give us recipes for your favourite courses, but some of you went well above and beyond the call of duty and put an enormous amount of work into making sure those menus looked truly delissimo. We thought some of you guys who worked really hard on your menus deserved a special extra prize for your efforts.

Each of the following receive an extra 50,000 coins for effort:

tiancai for their absolutely beautiful illustrated menu.

restocityboy for their enormous selection of different menus. It must have taken you hours to make all that restocityboy!

Congratulations to you all! We hope you enjoy seeing the new menus in Restaurant City!

Cook up a storm with Restaurant City!

April 28, 2009

We’re really proud to announce that Pet Society is now the most used app and game on Facebook with nearly 3 million daily active users and we’ve been working hard around the clock to keep bringing new features and additions, but we’d also like to show you something else we’ve been working on.

Cooking’s great. First you get to choose which ingredients to use. No more eating around the pickles. Next you get to use fun things like blenders. And then you actually get to eat it! But then there’s washing up. And drying. And putting away in closets. Kind of takes the fun out of it, doesn’t it?

So why not make your friends do it for you with Restaurant City!

First we’re going to give you your very own restaurant. You can name it, decorate it, fit it with all the equipment you need, and customize every little detail right down to the chimney pot. Or chimney pots. Or just make it one big chimney pot. The only limit is your imagination. Next up, we’re going to add a pinch of friendly rivalry. How about say a street full of your friends’ restaurants, all vying for the same customers? In fact, why not take a walk and check out the competition? You might be able to pick up a neat trick or two. Add a liberal sprinkling of different dishes which you can put on your very own menu — each requiring a different set of ingredients which you’ll need to find and trade with your friends — and you’ve got a recipe for some delicious fun!

So now you’ve got the smartest, best equipped restaurant on the block, you’re going to need to find someone to cook for you. That’s where your friends can help you out. You can choose who works for you and what they have to do. And if you’re feeling generous you can even let them take a break once in a while.

You can even buy new clothes for your character, to make them as smart or ridiculous as you like. It’s worth it just to see the look on your friend’s face when your character turns up for work at their restaurant wearing a cheese shaped hat!

We hope you like the art style we’re using in Restaurant City. We chose to go with a cartoon style because it’s easier to get great results in Flash, and choosing to work in three dimensions make the possibilities for you to customize your avatar endless.

So what are you waiting for? Click here to play Restaurant City now! We think you’re going to love it! And last but not least, a big thank you to everyone who’s been testing the beta version of the game. We’re still not ready to move the game out of beta yet but we’re enormously grateful for all of your suggestions to help make the game absolutely perfect, so please keep them coming so we can make the game work exactly as you’d like!
